Saturday 21 June: Crewe to Inverness

**ONE WAY - Return travel NOT included**

Step on board  our lovingly restored train at Crewe where we will embark on our journey behind an AC locomotive from the LSL stable. This former West Coast workhorse is poised to lead us on an exhilarating journey north, traversing the breathtaking scenery of the Lake District. As we glide through the stunning Lune Gorge, passengers will be treated to panoramic views that highlight the region's natural beauty.

We anticipate a lunchtime arrival in Carlisle, where you will have the opportunity to stretch your legs for approximately one hour. This will provide a chance to explore the historic city and savour its local offerings before we embark on the next leg of our scenic rail excursion.

The electric traction will give way to two Class 20 locomotives as we depart Carlisle, revealing the scenic Solway Firth on our left. The serene landscape contrasts with the mechanical symphony of our engines. We prepare for the challenge of the Beattock ascent. The reliable Class 20s, with their distinctive growl, tackle the gradients ahead. The climb offers breathtaking views of undulating hills and patchwork fields. The journey combines engineering marvel with natural beauty, showcasing the spirit of rail travel. Anticipation builds among passengers as we conquer the Beattock incline, highlighting the power of our locomotives and the charm of British railways.

The train then meanders through the Clyde Valley towards the more industrialised central belt. As we roll through Stirling, the majestic Wallace Monument comes into view, standing sentinel over the landscape. This impressive tower, dedicated to the Scottish hero William Wallace, offers a striking contrast to the lush greenery surrounding it.

Continuing on our journey, we make our way to Perth, where we plan another leg stretch. This brief stop allows passengers to disembark, take in the fresh air, and perhaps catch a glimpse of the River Tay, which flows gracefully through this historic city. With its rich heritage and picturesque scenery, Perth serves as a splendid waypoint on our excursion, offering a moment of respite before we continue our adventure through Scotland.

The Type 1 locomotives will be operating at full power as we journey north, traversing the picturesque landscape. As we pass through Pitlochry, the allure of the Scottish Highlands begins to unfold. The train will then navigate through the renowned Pass of Killiecrankie, a route steeped in history. Guests will be treated to breathtaking views of the Soldier's Leap, a site famed for its dramatic backdrop and poignant tales from the Jacobite conflict. This exciting segment of our scenic rail excursion promises an unforgettable experience steeped in the natural beauty and rich heritage of Scotland.

Next up is Blair Atholl, renowned for its station, which was constructed to serve the Duke of Atholl. As we embark on our ascent towards Drummochter, the landscape transforms into a stunning tableau. This stretch often reveals the majestic red deer, commonly seen grazing on the hillside. Their presence adds to the enchanting scenery, making this part of your journey truly memorable. The climb presents not only natural beauty but also a glimpse into the rich wildlife that inhabits these highlands, creating an experience that is both serene and awe-inspiring.

The famous Dalwhinnie Distillery comes into view on the right as we embark on the final 60 miles of today’s trip. Nestled in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, this distillery is renowned for its smooth single malt whisky, a testament to the unique landscape that surrounds it.

As we continue our journey, we will soon crest the summit at Slochd, where the panoramic views serve as a reminder of the beauty of this region. Following our ascent, we will descend towards the impressive Culloden Viaduct, an architectural marvel that spans the landscape gracefully.

Finally, we arrive in Inverness where history and culture await. This vibrant city, often referred to as the 'Gateway to the Highlands', offers a wealth of experiences to explore after our scenic ride.
